Maersa had been commissioned and designed to be a domestic, but early on it became obvious that she was a "Scrub." That is one of the Shaped who exhibit unanticipated characteristics deviating from specification, which happened about one percent of the time. Some Scrubs had problems that were lethal, like the inability to metabolize ATP or defective neurotransmitter chemistry, but the vast majority of Scrubs showed only superficial deviations from the planned phenotype.
Maersa was one of the minor deviations. Her horns were one unexpected characteristic which her commissioner, Dorothy Windsor Markham, sole heir of the Markham hotel empire, was willing to overlook. After all, she had commissioned an exotic, and the horns growing on the young Maersa only enhanced her exotic look. The other deviation, however, was harder to ignore. By the time Maersa was twelve, her breasts were already passing through "G" cup territory without slowing down, which thoroughly disgusted her owner. She wanted a domestic, not a porn star. Certainly not a dairy goat.
Lady Markham would have simply had her altered, but that had been prohibited only a few years before Maersa's commissioning by the "Docking, Budding and Abuse Act of 2068," which prohibited major surgery solely for cosmetic reasons. Since Maersa seemed to be fully comfortable with the weight of her growing breasts, Lady Markham had no recourse but to write her off, evict her and commission a replacement. A few, like Maersa, were Scrubs for various reasons, leaving them without even paper owners or function status. The senior counselor, Petrovich, was a six hundred pound Kodiak who had been culled from the Kazakh infantry after budget cuts. He took his role as leader and protector very seriously. Anybody who caused trouble for any member of his adopted family would have to "Talk To The Bear." He made sure that Maerso knew she would have a place to live, no matter what. Here at last, she found a place where she could feel at home.
